Simplicity

Along with low cost being a key design feature, the Hummingbird Series modules were designed for ease of use. Focusing on a core Linx value, the HumPRO™ Series wireless data module is designed for simplicity, compared to other designs that add unnecessary features, complexity and cost to their design. Housed in a compact reflow-compatible SMD package, the transceiver requires no external RF components except an antenna, which greatly simplifies integration and lowers assembly costs.

A standard UART interface is used to configure the module for operation and for the data input and output. This is suitable for direct connection to UARTs on many microcontrollers, USB converters and RS-232 converters. A simple command set is used for configuration and control. Modules can be pre-configured for fixed point-to-point or broadcast topologies allowing streaming data (no commands) during operation. The HumPRO™ Series RF transceiver module offers a number of features that make it suitable for many data transfer applications.

By building on the Hummingbird platform and focusing on a low cost, FHSS protocol, Linx Technologies has been able to bring down the cost of wireless data transfer dramatically. With the addition of the Pre-Certified HumPRO™ Series we have made it even easier for people to develop their products for the Internet of Things. – Kris Lafko, VP of Marketing & Sales at Linx Technologies

Networking

The HumPRO™ Series modules can be used to create many types of wireless networks. By design, the modules do not provide network routing since the internal memory size of the module would limit the overall network size. Having the network routing outside of the RF module dramatically increases the level of nodes within your network without the worry of module limitations.

Best in Class Master Development System

To aid rapid development, the HumPRO™ Series low cost RF modules are available as part of a newly conceived type of Master Development System. This comprehensive development kit is designed to assist in the rapid evaluation and integration of the HumPRO™ Series data transceiver modules. The all-inclusive system features several pre-assembled evaluation boards, which include everything needed to quickly test the operation of the transceiver modules.

New Amplified RF Transceiver Module Adds Best-in-Class Real-World Range and Simple Implementation at High Data Rates

June 8, 2017 – Linx Technologies – a Merlin, OR based developer and manufacturer of wireless components – is pleased to announce the introduction of the Amplified HumPRO™ Series RF transceiver module. The Amplified HumPRO™ Series RF transceiver module is the easiest-to-implement solution for simple long range wireless connections. Unlike other pre-certified modules, it has a best-in-class real-world range of over 12.9km (8 miles) with sustained data rates 200 – 1,500 times higher than competing protocols. The Amplified HumPRO’s  pre-compiled software supports many common use cases out-of-the-box at 50% of the total cost of implementation of comparable solutions.

Designed to transmit digital data across a long-range wireless link, the module is a completely integrated RF transceiver and processor. With a built-in frequency hopping protocol that manages all of the transmission functions, no on-chip programming is required. Simply configure a few registers using a binary command set.

This makes the Amplified HumPRO™ Series transceiver ideal for long-range data and telemetry applications that require data rates of up to 115kbps. These can include agriculture, pipeline, signage, industrial sensors, transportation, and many Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

”We designed the Amplified HumPRO™ module so product developers don’t have to worry about range,“ said Cristin Dziekonski, Director of Embedded Engineering at Linx Technologies. “Whether the Amplified HumPRO™ module is being used in a harsh indoor environment or in a long-distance outdoor application, customers can be confident that their data will reach its intended destination.”

Extraordinary Range of Over 12.9km (8 miles)

The Amplified HumPRO™ Series adds a front-end amplifier block to the popular 900MHz HumPRO™ Series. This boosts transmitter output power to +25dBm and receiver sensitivity to -108dBm at a data rate of 19.2kbps. This 133dB link budget gives the module a range of up to 12.9km (8 miles), making the module suitable for applications that need to send data over long distances at a much higher data throughput than competitive long-range solutions. Applications that don’t need the full range benefit from the greater environmental penetration and reliability in noisy locations.

Pre-Compiled Code and Simple UART Interface

The Amplified HumPRO™ module is fully integrated. There is no code to download, no compiler to buy, no tools to purchase to program the module. There is a simple UART interface with a series of commands to configure the module. A built-in Join Process automates establishment of a star network with a few button presses. This makes integrating the Amplified HumPRO™ into a design quick and easy.

128-Bit AES Encryption

The module supports industry-standard AES-128 encryption. It can accept a key written on the UART or it can create a random key from ambient RF noise. This key cannot be read out of the module, and is transferred securely to other modules through a Join Process.

Mix and Match to Tailor the System

The Amplified HumPRO™ Series operates with the HumPRO™ Series of modules, gateways, and remotes, enabling mixed systems for many different use cases. The amplified module improves range while the standard module has lower current consumption for battery-powered devices. It can also work with the HumPRC™ Series for remote control applications.

Pre-Certified

The Amplified HumPRO™ Series has received modular certification for the United States and Canada, reducing development risk and time-to-market.

Master Development System

A complete development system is available that contains everything required to evaluate the module. This includes multiple test and development boards, development software for configuring the modules, antennas, complete documentation and even USB cables. Purchase of the kit also includes free technical support and PCB layout review.

The module is available now directly from Linx Technologies and from authorized stocking distributors.

The Raven™ Platform Thread-Based RF modules consist of an 802.15.4 RF transceiver paired with a microcontroller.

Unlike competing solutions, Linx designed and optimized the Raven™ module specifically to run over proven 6LoWPAN / IP-based protocol stacks, such as Thread.

Linx will be showing its Thread-based Raven™ at Embedded World in Nuremberg, Germany, this February 23-25 at Booth 5-430 in Hall 5.

Linx Technologies continues to add powerful options to its IoT ecosystem offerings with its Raven™ Platform. We believe that Thread will provide the best way to connect and control products in the home, and we are excited to present an RF module optimized to the Thread protocol in 2016. – Kris Lafko, VP of Marketing & Sales at Linx Technologies

Next Generation Designs

Thread-Based RF ModulesLatest generation silicon provides best-in-class standard link budget (-110 dBm) and sufficient memory (512k flash) to run Thread and applications stacks effectively and efficiently. In addition, dual crystals provide highly accurate wake-up timing for sleepy end devices. This combination of excellent link budget, increased memory space and accurate wake-up timing make the Raven™ module a very attractive wireless solution.

These RF modules have three antenna output options: on-board chip antenna, u.FL connector and castellation connection for PCB antennas. Combined with its compact size, this added flexibility provides designers with myriad options in their own designs.

Performance Meets Flexibility

The Raven™ module is an IEEE 802.15.4 standard radio paired with an ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard specifies the radio PHY and MAC layers, the low-level physical control and operation of the radio. This standard has become popular due to its support for low-power and high-reliability systems. It also provides a foundation for standardized wireless communication between products from different manufacturers.

Thread builds on this by defining several software layers that sit on top of the MAC layer. These layers define how information is transmitted and routed through a network. By using the same techniques that are used on the Internet, Thread enables seamless communication from the Internet to the end device.

About Thread

Thread Modules
Thread is a wireless protocol designed for the Internet of Things to simply and securely connect devices in the home to each other and the cloud. Thread is a mesh network capable of reliably connecting hundreds of products around the home without blasting through battery life. Thread uses standard 802.15.4 radios and adapts the same Internet Protocol (IP) that is used by the Web. Adding features like mesh networking, multiple border routers, direct address-ability from the Internet, no single point of failure and the ability to cope with changing network conditions makes the system extremely robust.

The HumPRO™ Series supports 128-bit AES encryption as an option. It also provides a unique join process that makes setting up a network in the field as simple as a few button presses.
All modules have a unique 32-bit serial number that can be used as an address. Additional address modes support customer-assigned 16 or 32-bit source and destination addressing. The addressing methods support point-to-point and broadcast links. Address masking by the receiving module allows for creating subnets. More advanced network methods can also be implemented with an external microcontroller.

Low Cost RF Data Modules

868MHz Wireless Data ModulesThe HumPRO™ Series module is a completely integrated RF transceiver and processor designed to transmit digital data across a wireless link. It uses advanced System on Chip (SoC) technology to minimize the footprint and the number of components.

By building on the Hummingbird platform and focusing on low cost with agility, Linx Technologies has been able to create a high performance, cost effective module in 868MHz. With LBT + AFA, this 868MHz RF module is both simple and powerful, making it easier for people to develop their products for the Internet of Things.

Flexible Thread-Based Border Router and Gateway

Thread Border RouterJanuary 5, 2016 – Linx, a Merlin, OR based developer and manufacturer of Internet of Things (IoT) Products and Solutions is pleased to announce its new Thread Border Router and Gateway. Linx will be showing its Thread-based Gateway and Border Router at CES in Las Vegas this January at the Thread booth (#70560) in the Sands Expo.

The Linx Thread Border Router and Gateway is a compact, high performance and cost-effective solution to bridge Thread networks to the cloud. It combines an IEEE 802.15.4 radio running the Thread protocol with an Ethernet interface. It manages all of the communications and protocols, so no software development is required.

Unlike competitive solutions, the system runs embedded firmware on an ARM microcontroller instead of costly microprocessors running bloated Linux-based operating systems. As a Border Router, it allows IPv6 direct addressability from the Internet; as a Gateway it allows traditional firewall traversal to device cloud services.

Next Generation Designs

Latest generation silicon provides best-in-class standard link budget (-110 dBm) and sufficient memory (512k flash) to run Thread and applications stacks effectively and efficiently. In addition, dual crystals provide highly accurate wake-up timing for sleepy end devices, This combination of excellent link budget, increased memory space and accurate wake-up timing make the Raven™ Platform a very attractive wireless solution..

Functionality, Simplicity and Security

Based on its Raven™ platform, the Linx Border Router and Gateway is a flexible system with increased functionality, combining cost savings with ease of use. Key features include:

  • IEEE 802.15.4 radio running the Thread protocol with an Ethernet interface
  • No software development required
  • Simple bridge from Thread network to cloud-based services

The new Thread-Based Border Router and Gateway is an innovative solution for the Thread home automation ecosystem. Based on its new Raven™ Platform, this new product combines simplicity and security to home automation and we are excited to introduce this  in Thread’s booth at CES in 2016. – Kris Lafko, VP of Marketing & Sales at Linx Technologies
