Next Generation Designs
Latest generation silicon provides best-in-class standard link budget (-110 dBm) and sufficient memory (512k flash) to run Thread and applications stacks effectively and efficiently. In addition, dual crystals provide highly accurate wake-up timing for sleepy end devices. This combination of excellent link budget, increased memory space and accurate wake-up timing make the Raven™ module a very attractive wireless solution.
These RF modules have three antenna output options: on-board chip antenna, u.FL connector and castellation connection for PCB antennas. Combined with its compact size, this added flexibility provides designers with myriad options in their own designs.
Performance Meets Flexibility
The Raven™ module is an IEEE 802.15.4 standard radio paired with an ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard specifies the radio PHY and MAC layers, the low-level physical control and operation of the radio. This standard has become popular due to its support for low-power and high-reliability systems. It also provides a foundation for standardized wireless communication between products from different manufacturers.
Thread builds on this by defining several software layers that sit on top of the MAC layer. These layers define how information is transmitted and routed through a network. By using the same techniques that are used on the Internet, Thread enables seamless communication from the Internet to the end device.
About Thread
Thread is a wireless protocol designed for the Internet of Things to simply and securely connect devices in the home to each other and the cloud. Thread is a mesh network capable of reliably connecting hundreds of products around the home without blasting through battery life. Thread uses standard 802.15.4 radios and adapts the same Internet Protocol (IP) that is used by the Web. Adding features like mesh networking, multiple border routers, direct address-ability from the Internet, no single point of failure and the ability to cope with changing network conditions makes the system extremely robust.

Pre-Certified, Low Cost RF Data Modules
July 16, 2015 — Linx Technologies, a Merlin, OR based developer and manufacturer of Internet of Things (IoT) Products and Solutions, is pleased to introduce its new pre-certified, low cost RF data modules. The HumPRO™ Series transceiver is built on the popular Hummingbird platform, and is a frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) transceiver designed for the reliable transfer of digital data.
Available today in 900MHz, the HumPRO™ 900MHz version outputs up to 10dBm. This results in a line-of-sight range of up to 1600m (1.0 mile).
Pre-Certified, Low Cost RF Data Modules
The HumPRO™ Series module is a completely integrated RF transceiver and processor designed to transmit digital data across a wireless link. It employs a fast-locking FHSS system for noise immunity and higher transmitter output power as allowed by government regulations.
With modular FCC approval in the United States and IC approval in Canada, The HumPRO™ pre-certified modules reduce the design cycle, cost and implementation of a wireless solution in 900 MHz. Available in two approaches to antenna connectivity – castellations or through a u.FL connector – the product is available as two different products.
Fast Locking Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum
The wireless data module employs a fast-locking FHSS system for noise immunity and higher transmitter output power as allowed by government regulations. The fast-locking module also allows the module to wake up, send data, and go to sleep quickly, making it an excellent solution for battery powered applications. It handles all protocol functions automatically and has options for acknowledgements, Listen Before Talk (LBT) and assured delivery. Multiple hopping patterns enable multiple systems to operate in proximity without interference.
Simplicity
Along with low cost being a key design feature, the Hummingbird Series modules were designed for ease of use. Focusing on a core Linx value, the HumPRO™ Series wireless data module is designed for simplicity, compared to other designs that add unnecessary features, complexity and cost to their design. Housed in a compact reflow-compatible SMD package, the transceiver requires no external RF components except an antenna, which greatly simplifies integration and lowers assembly costs.
A standard UART interface is used to configure the module for operation and for the data input and output. This is suitable for direct connection to UARTs on many microcontrollers, USB converters and RS-232 converters. A simple command set is used for configuration and control. Modules can be pre-configured for fixed point-to-point or broadcast topologies allowing streaming data (no commands) during operation. The HumPRO™ Series RF transceiver module offers a number of features that make it suitable for many data transfer applications.
By building on the Hummingbird platform and focusing on a low cost, FHSS protocol, Linx Technologies has been able to bring down the cost of wireless data transfer dramatically. With the addition of the Pre-Certified HumPRO™ Series we have made it even easier for people to develop their products for the Internet of Things. – Kris Lafko, VP of Marketing & Sales at Linx Technologies
Networking
The HumPRO™ Series modules can be used to create many types of wireless networks. By design, the modules do not provide network routing since the internal memory size of the module would limit the overall network size. Having the network routing outside of the RF module dramatically increases the level of nodes within your network without the worry of module limitations.
Best in Class Master Development System
To aid rapid development, the HumPRO™ Series low cost RF modules are available as part of a newly conceived type of Master Development System. This comprehensive development kit is designed to assist in the rapid evaluation and integration of the HumPRO™ Series data transceiver modules. The all-inclusive system features several pre-assembled evaluation boards, which include everything needed to quickly test the operation of the transceiver modules.
